Demon possessions, deep space tension, and hell dimensions, oh my! The X-Men are no strangers to the bone-chilling, spine-tingling, terrifying and thrilling. Join multiple possession survivor and one-time vampire hunter Kate Pryde (@abbeyfrisco) around the campfire as she puts the ‘shadow’ back in Shadowcat and takes you through an interactive analysis of X-Men horror tropes, themes, and what they mean.
Having been unfairly villainized, used, and ‘othered’ by people chomping at the bit to make anything they don’t understand into monsters (sometimes literally), horror has become a way of life for the X-Men. From stories of surviving and ruling Limbo, the existential threat of the Brood, to powers tied to nightmares and fear, and the apparent X-Men rite-of-passage of being possessed by a demon at least once in your life, Kate Pryde will walk you through not just walls in this class, but the various themes found within the horror & supernatural landscape of mutant history. We’ll also deconstruct the ‘monster’ narrative in order to give greater insight into why those types of stories can resonate so strongly with us. Interrogating the dark can illuminate aspects of ourselves we didn’t know were there, and empower us to stand up to our individual and collective fears, taking us from hoping we survive the experience, to thriving despite the experience. In a time when it feels like the horrors are ever persisting, this discussion is intended to show something else – that so do we.
